Eannelli, Jim: Just Deserts

If you’re not from Wisconsin -- or the Milwaukee area, specifically -- you might not be familiar with the name Jim Eannelli. But the sought-after producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist has been in punk, new wave, techno-pop and good ol’ rock bands over the decades. And now he's released his first solo album.

Just Deserts is a diverse record with broad appeal featuring Eannelli on guitars, bass and percussion. He sings in a weathered voice that gives these dozen songs a lived-in vibe and enhances the record’s authenticity, and he's backed by a solid roster of musicians who perform with the same passion and professionalism Eannelli brings to this project.

The album opens with “29 Women,” a blazing condemnation of war with musical echoes of Tom Petty, while Eannelli channels Jackson Browne on the melancholy “Where I’ve Been.” Standout track “Christine” is drenched in Allman Brothers Band-style keyboards (courtesy of Gary Tanin, who also mastered the record and has worked with the likes of Daryl Stuermer and Roger Powell), and “I Want to Be Your Man” rattles with a catchy mix of blues and pop. “Waitin’” is pure pensive pop, “Train From Chicago” leans heavily into the blues, and stompers “Down My Road” and “Should I Try” prove Eannelli can still rock hard. Throughout, his guitar solos elevate already outstanding songs.

Just Deserts -- despite its playful title -- is a serious record that demands your attention. Your ears will embrace its instantly warm familiarity, but your head and heart will linger over these songs laced with despair and yearning. With each successive listen, I hear something new. And that, my friends, is indicative of a powerful record.
