Hinds, Allan: The Good Fight

Allen Hinds is one of those guitarists you think you’ve never heard of, but you’ve probably heard! His resume is vast having played with the likes of Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, and Eric Marienthal to name a few. In addition, his music has been featured on TV shows such as JAG, Pawn Stars, and Sons of Guns. Hines' latest The Good Fight should make fans of instrumental guitar music very happy. The opening “Fearless� shows you how a guitar can give you that vocal vibe, Hines displays many different techniques that give his lines a vocal quality. The Rhodes keyboard solo is an added bonus in this one as his tight band grooves behind the lead instruments. Hines phrasing is so good, you can tell he is aware of each note, whether he’s blazing through a line, or just touching the volume knob to give that one note more character, dynamics are important to his style. The title track will display this talent, subtle playing over the slow bluesy backing music is wonderful. The song builds with an almost “Kashmir� like motif as Hinds lets his guitar get a bit more ferocious. His slide work sings, what wonderful tone comes from those hands. “Blithe Spirit� shows how well he blends a beautiful melodic line and then hits you over the head with a legato flurry, both working perfectly for the song. The acoustic “Go Quietly� shows another facet of Hinds playing, although by now you know he can play just about anything. The blues return on “Webster’s Lake� with more impressive slide work, and that organ adds the perfect touch to the song.

My favorite track is “Slither�, for some reason Hinds just catches my ear over and over in this one. The title describes the feel of the main theme, various guitars swell in the background as Hinds emotive playing builds throughout. As great a player as Hinds is, the song writing stands out. As I’ve said many times, it can be difficult for instrumental music to be impactful as most people associate songs with the vocal melody, let’s just say these songs are packed with memorable melodies. Guitar players and music fans alike should find a lot to like from Allen Hinds on The Good Fight.
