Alphataurus: 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla

Alphataurus's 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla Embarks on a Sonic Odyssey.

Twelve years since their sophomore masterpiece AttosecondO, Alphataurus returns with their third studio album, 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla, a captivating conceptual journey through space and time. This Italian progressive rock outfit weaves a rich tapestry of sound, paying homage to the classic sound of early 1970s bands such as Genesis and Pink Floyd while maintaining a modern edge, an accomplishment sustained on Pietro Pellegrini’s outstanding Hammond and synth performance. The album's distinctive vocals, courtesy of Franco Giaffreda, strike a perfect balance between strength and subtlety, eschewing lush theatricality for a more grounded approach. Alphataurus's sound is characterized by sharp hooks, smart arrangements, and a focus on melody, evident in standout tracks like "Pista 6," the epic "Wormhole," and the title track "Viaggio Nel Nulla."

"Wormhole" showcases the band's eclecticism, with a beautiful flute solo by Giaffreda himself, adding depth to this complex composition. "Meta e Meta'" embodies the essence of Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI), incorporating Mediterranean nuances and narrative vocals that bring the album's conceptual theme full circle. Guitarist Guido Wassermann shines throughout, delivering outstanding performances on both acoustic and electric guitars. His work is elevated by a solid chord section and a flawless rhythmic foundation, courtesy of the band's exceptional rhythm section comprised by bassist Tony Alemanno, and drummer Diego Mariani.

The album's sole misstep is the closing track, "E=mc2," which, although beautiful, feels somewhat out of place. However, this minor quibble doesn't detract from the overall excellence of 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla.

Alphataurus's long-awaited return is a triumph, cementing their position alongside Italy's progressive rock legends like Le Orme, Banco, and PFM. Let's hope we won't have to wait another twelve years for their next release. Until then, 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla will remain a constant companion, a testament to the enduring power of progressive rock.
