Brant Bjork Trio: Once Upon a Time in the Desert
Brant Bjork Trio's Once Upon a Time in the Desert is a sonic revelation, blending fuzz-laced riffs, infectious grooves, and melodic atonality. Bjork's distinctive vocals weave a unique tapestry, elevated by the rhythm section's arid precision, courtesy of bassist Mario Lallo and drummer Ryan Güt.
This album marks a departure from Bjork's desert/stoner rock roots, forged alongside Kyuss and Fu Manchu. Instead, the Brant Bjork Trio embraces a more accessible, danceable vibe, akin to Queens of the Stone Age, Fatso Jetson, and Yawning Man. Echoes of Lenny Kravitz's rock 'n' roll sensibilities surface, injecting a commercial appeal without sacrificing Bjork's songwriting integrity.
Exploring new melodic territories, Bjork ventures beyond his comfort zone, yet remains rooted in his signature style. Once Upon a Time in the Desert is a testament to his evolution as a musician, crafting an album that's both timeless and modern. From the opening notes, Bjork's guitar work mesmerizes, conjuring images of swirling desert sandstorms. Lallo's bass lines pulse with energy, while Güt's drumming provides a propulsive backbone. Bjork's vocals, worn and weathered, add a layer of authenticity.
Each track unfolds like a desert odyssey, navigating blistering rock in songs like "U.R. Free” and “Backin’ The Daze", delivering atmospheric soundscapes in “Down The Mountain”, “Sunshine Is Making Love to Your Mind”, and “Do You Got Some Fire?", and presenting more laid-back grooves in "Magic Surfer Magazine”, “Astrological Blues…”, and “Higher Lows". The album's sequencing is masterful, balancing intensity and introspection.
Once Upon a Time in the Desert is Brant Bjork's triumphant return, cementing his status as a stoner rock icon. This album will captivate fans of the genre and beyond, inviting listeners to embark on a sonic journey through the desert's hidden oases.

Brant Bjork Trio: Once Upon a Time in the Desert Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2024-11-15 20:03:22 My Score:
Sometimes, a new album just grabs you by the throat, tugs at your heart, and embeds itself into your brain so hard that you really can't do a damn thing about it. That's happened to me with Once Upon a Time in the Desert from the Brant Bjork Trio, their brand new album of stoner rock anthems. Actually, just calling it stoner rock really doesn't do the album justice, though at its core, that's exactly what it is. Ultimately, this is just a great rock album, the band have put together 9 new songs that contain plenty of groove, loads of riffs, and no shortage of piss 'n vinegar. "U.R. Free", "Backin' the Daze", and "Higher Lows" jump right out of the gate and give you everything that you will be in store for on the remainder of the album. Brant is playing guitar and singing throughout this album, and his beefy riffs and tasty leads and fills are a revelation, and his voice is perfectly suited to these heavy, chunky groove monsters. Bassist Mario Lalli though is the secret weapon, as his thick, lead bass lines remind of the great Jack Bruce, or even Glenn Hughes, and saddled up next to Bjork's heavy riffing, creates a wall of groovy sounds. Other tracks to look out for are "Down the Mountain", the crushing "Rock and Roll in the Dirt", the Hendrix-influenced "Do You Got Some Fire", and the killer "Sunshine".
It's bluesy, it's groovy, and it's a feast for those who love big riffs...so much fun, and it's quickly becoming my favorite Brant Bjork album. Don't miss this one!
