Philadephia's very own doom stalwarts Heavy Temple created quite a bit of buzz with their 2021 album Lupi Amoris, and now here in 2024 they have come up with another winner in the shape of Garden of Heathens, a sure-fire contender for doom album of the year. Led by the potent vocal attack of High Priestess Nighthawk, the band have created eight new tracks here of dark, menacing doom with a psychedelic edge, starting off with the excellent opener "Extreme Indifference to Life". "Hiraeth" is faster paced but with some serious bottom-end, while "Divine Indiscretion" offers up some deliciously evil wah-wah guitar licks with the Priestess soaring over the top...Lucifer fans will love this track. "House of Warship" crushes, the vocals so powerful, while "Snake Oil (and Other Remedies)" contains plenty of psychedelic overtones thanks to some slashing lead guitar solos. More searing lead guitar collides with crushing riffs on the rampaging "Jesus Wept", another of Garden of Heathens standout tracks.
Toss in some amazing album artwork, and you have a must-hear doom release for any fan of the almighty riff.
