If you've been following our 'New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal Primer' series on our YouTube channel, no doubt you've seen that there are a wealth of young metal acts who have surfaced in the last 10-20 years going back to the early '80s with their brand of heavy music. Ohio's Ironflame is one such band, and their latest release for High Roller Records confirms an already strong showing so far in their discography. Where Madness Dwells contains eight tracks of epic heavy metal, recalling the glory days of Iron Maiden, Armored Saint, Virgin Steele, and Manowar. From the opening blast of "Everlasting Fire", the band assaults the senses with precision riffing, soaring vocals, blazing solos, and a rock-solid foundation. "Under the Spell" could have easily slotted onto either The Number of the Beast or Piece of Mind from Iron Maiden, while the crushing "A Funeral Within" provides some of the albums best riffing, and reminds a bit of Stryper at their heaviest. "Ready to Strike" is a balls-to-the-wall speed metal rager, and anthems like "A Curse Upon Mankind" and "The Phantom Flame" provide plenty of melodic, memorable heavy metal moments. The best might even be saved for last with the pulverizing, mid-paced title track, which has no shortage of metallic riffing and fiery vocals.
If you can't get enough of the glorious early '80s metal scene, Ironflame is out to prove that it's not just a loving memory, but alive and well 40 years later.
