The 23rd(!) album from MOTU -- which is the stage name for singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dr. Richard Michelson and stands for “Music Of The Universe -- is a thought-provoking slab of slow-burn blues rock with Americana overtones that explores humanity’s propensity for self-destruction. That means we get songs on Acceding to the Apocalypse about climate change, racism, political chaos, homelessness, gun violence and income inequality. This could be the soundtrack to the 2024 U.S. presidential election!
MOTU and Rich Fry play some killer, soul-bending guitar solos, while Michelson’s gruff singing contrasts nicely with Dee Michelson’s understated vocal delivery. Acoustic opener “The Cost” showcases both of their voices and builds anticipation for what's to come, while “Love Is All We Need” emerges as a lengthy mid-paced rocker with wailing guitar solos in the beginning, middle and end. And the title track is an epic instrumental stomper anchored by drummer Ed Modzel. All of which makes “You’re Just a Pile of Crap” so jarring, at least before you give it a listen. The laid-back song with the crass title actually is an indictment of selfishness and narcissism that fits perfectly with the album’s overall vibe.
Acceding to the Apocalypse, despite its grim overtones, deserves to be heard by listeners who appreciate intelligent and memorable music.
