Dream Evil: Metal Gods

Dream Evil is a straight-forward Traditional/Power metal band from Sweden. They rose to prominence in the 2000s with albums like Dragon Slayer and The Book of Heavy Metal. If well-produced, classic metal anthems, that aren't shy to bring the cheese, is your thing, look no further than this band, or this album.

The title track 'Metal Gods' is a good litmus test for the album as a whole. It's a mid-paced stomper of a track, with solid riffing and classy vocals. However, it also contains some super cheesy lyrics referencing the likes of Priest, Maiden and Manowar being 'The Metal Gods'. If you're not willing to turn your brain off and just embrace the 'metal' (mettaaaaaaaaaal) you might have some trouble with this album. However, if you're happy to go all in and embrace the cheese, this album hits the spot.

I fall into the latter camp, thanks to having a soft spot for their 2000s output, so the 10 track album of Heavy Metal anthems is an enjoyable listen to my ears. The silky vocals of Niklas Isfeldt are stellar as always; part Halford, part Dickenson, part Robbie Williams! And the rhythm guitar and production of Fredrik Nordström means you're getting a great sounding and well composed release.

My favourite tracks are Metal Gods, Masters of Arms, and Chosen Force, but there's nothing on here that I would call out and out filler.

Metal Gods is an easy recommendation for fans of traditional Heavy Metal.
