REZN & Vinnum Sabbathi: Silent Future
Here is a very cool album by not one but two bands. We have the Chicago based psychedelic doom metal outfit REZN and the Mexican four-piece purveyors of stoner doom Vinnum Sabbathi. Both bands are new to me so I am going into this one with little knowledge of what to expect. Well, I have to say this has been an excellent experience getting to know these bands. It is important to note this is not a split release, the bands play together as one unit gelling amazingly well with each other.
The music is trippy and spacey, Hawkwind certainly came to mind, and if I were to use one word to describe Silent Future it would be cosmic, with a capital C. There is so much atmosphere and trippiness at play here, with seamless transitions from mellow to heavy, the dynamics in this music are truly impressive. Spoken word vocals are used to propel the sci-fi concept along, and they are incorporated beautifully, never getting in the way of the music.
“Born Into Catatonia” begins the album with atmospheric and shimmering synths, all wrapped in a tasty cosmic vibe. On “Unknown Ancestor” space-like droning synths and spoken words gives the opening a trippy edge. Slowly evolving guitar chords take shape, followed by a methodical groove and excellent lead vocals, kind of dreamy and distant. Dirge-like doomy riffs give the music a jolt of heaviness. It’s an excellent combination of trippy celestial atmospheres and melancholic doom. “The Cultigen” is a midtempo tune with a gorgeous melody and dream-like vocals, certainly an album highlight. I hear some Anathema in this one. One of my favourites has to be the excellent “Hypersurreal” with its bombastically heavy intro creating a mssive slab of sound eventually turning into an ethereal gentleness with melodic lead vocals. The heaviness returns, making this a superb contrast of light and heavy sounds. The band’s contrasting styles really blend well together throughout the entire disc.
Silent Future is a superbly crafted celestial journey into heavy doom and psychedelia that I found to be completely addictive. I cannot recommend this album enough!
