California stoner rock/metal legends Fu Manchu have been at the forefront of this style of music for three decades, and with their latest album The Return of Tomorrow, the band show no signs of running out of ideas any time soon. Blending the heavy riffing of doom, the fury of punk, and the exploratory nature of psych, Fu Manchu have crafted 13 new bone-crunching, groovealicious songs here on The Return of Tommorrow, easily casting this near the top of their already impressive discography. For the album line-up features:
Scott Hill: Vocals / Guitar
Bob Balch: Lead Guitar
Brad Davis: Bass
Scott Reeder: Drums
It doesn't get much better than the opening 1-2-3 punch of "Dehumanize", "Loch Ness Wrecking Machine", and especially "Hands of the Zodiac", each one a complete crushing with massive stoner riffs and Hill's near spoken word/barking vocal style. "Haze the Hides" also packs a punch (the guitar tones on this album kill, packed with fuzz and mean intent), while "Roads of the Lonely" contains some of the juiciest riffs and pummeling drums on the entire album. To add some variety, the band has even spliced in some cool moments of psychedelia on tracks such as "Lifetime Waiting", "Destroyin' Light", the spacey "Solar Baptized", and the floating closer "High Tide". Even when they get kinda funky, as they do on "Liquify", the results are still quite crushing and heavy- handed.
Chalk up another winner from Fu Manchu, a band that just keeps cranking out fun, heavy albums for all those worshippers of the almighty riff. Long may they reign!
