Italy's Ufomammut not only have one of the hardest names to pronounce, but they also play a style of music that's often difficult to describe. Hidden is their latest album, their 10th, and once again, the band tries to both confuse and thrill the listener with their blend of monolithic doom, eerie psychedelia, and electronic meanderings. Just three guys make up this racket, and they are:
Poia: Guitars
Urlo: Bass, Vocals, Fxs and Synths
Levre: Drums
Over the course of 10 albums, and not one of them sounding like the others, Ufomammut consistently keep their fans guessing which way they will go next. Here on Hidden, things kick off with the mind-blowing "Crookead", 10+ minutes of apocalyptic doom with heaping amounts of swirling psychedelia dripping over the top. Talk about mounds of slow, doom-laden riffing! The vocals are neither fully doom waling or death metal growling, but floating off in the distance above the mountainous waves of guitar/bass sludge, synths, and pummeling drums. "Kismet" crushes just as hard, but the middle section, littered with proggy/psych synth clouds, is a great way to mix things up before the scalding guitar solos and pulverizing riffs come back into play. "Spidher" is one of the shortest pieces here, but man, it's so heavy, and the haunting vocals of "Mausoleum" will send chills up and down your spine, floating above a barrage of just mind-bending doom-laden psychedelia. The album closes with "Leeched", another full-on masher, and "Soulost", a cool space rock love fest for any fan of Hawkwind or early Monster Magnet.
Ufomammut has a lot of intriguing and enjoyable albums, but Hidden might just be one of their strongest yet. If you wanna know what 'heavy psych' is all about, this is the album to learn from.
