DEZOLVE: Asterism

As is often the case these days, I learn about many of these fusion bands from my buddy George Lamie. Check this one out he’ll say, and I’m always fairly certain to be in for a treat. It only took the first track “Gemini” to sell me that these guys have the goods. What a great opener, the rhythm section comes out blazing, very impressive. Around the 3:10 mark, the song shifts to an absolutely gorgeous stark piano motif with impressive clean lead guitar work. They waste little time building the tension back up, and you get some great piano work towards the end of the track. If this one doesn’t grab you, I’m not sure what will.

I’ve mentioned recently how a couple albums have taken a few spins to really grab me. This is another that when I first listened, I enjoyed it, but something kept drawing me back, and each listen kept turning my ear and begging for another. You want to get a little funky, try “Ecliptic Walk”, using more of that clean guitar tone. The synth/lead guitar tradeoffs are a blast, I found myself wishing that section would go longer. The vibe for this record is very upbeat, I’d even use the term bright to describe the music. “Big Dipper” features some incredible bass playing, and the drumming drives everything, I love the tempos this band throws at you.

This is a long record at close to an hour and fifteen minutes, so, there is a lot to absorb. Without question the high points for me, are truly high! “Star Eater” is probably my favorite track, this one grabs you and does not let go. There are vibes which I always enjoy, that added sound and texture work so well, and the backing music is quite heavy. The lead guitar work just smokes, you want to hear some fretboard flying, pop this one on. I always focus on the guitar, so let me just say the entire band will blow you away on this one. “Voyage of Altair” does a complete 180, a gorgeous song opening with fretless bass, and the piano and guitar take center stage. DEZOLVE know how to end an album, as “Peace Sign” gives you explosive energy, a big band feel (with keys instead of horns) and a final impression will have you starting all over again with track 1.
