Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Blue Heron are poised to become one of the cornerstone bands on the Blues Funeral Recordings label with the release of their latest album Everything Fades, which features nine songs drenched in desert heaviness in the grand tradition of Kyuss, Truckfighters, Colour Haze, and Yawning Man. From the opening menace of "Null Geodesic", "Everything Fades", to the Black Sabbath meets Soundgarden love of "Swansong", there are punishing riffs, heavy rhythms, and aggressive vocals at every turn. "We Breathe Darkness" delivers the punishing, dark power of early Alice in Chains and Clutch, while "Dinosaur" rumbles along like a runaway Brontosaurus looking for the next forest to devour. The band dip into their psychedelic leanings with "Trepidation", and even reveal a more melodic side on the haunting "Clearmountain". Closing out the album is the crushing "Bellwether", followed by a brief yet heavy instrumental "Flight of the Heron", which could have easily been expanded on.
Top-notch playing throughout, including a wealth of big-time riffing, and instantly memorable songs make Everything Fades a stoner/desert rock album that is easy to recommend.
