Onlap: Waves

You know you’re getting old when music scenes that seemed to pass by mere seconds ago are being revived by young-bucks looking to tip their hats to their youth. Doffing that cap with Waves are French, well I guess Nu-Metal punk outfit Onlap, a band who have paid their dues through a selection of self-released outings and now arrive with the might of AFM Records behind them.

What's for sure and certain is that if you heard this album without the preamble, not for one second would you presume that it came from anywhere other the good old U, S of A, so strictly does it adhere to the foundations laid down by the likes of Papa Roach, Linkin Park and their ilk. Admittedly Onlap do look to jump from nu style to nu style from song to song, but anyone that has come into earshot of this album as I’ve been listening to it has commented that Waves sounds like, well, everyone and anyone. And that’s an issue that strong performances, a talented singer and hooks the size of Belgium simply can’t overcome. Not just do you find yourself forgetting that it isn’t Black Veil Brides or Green Day or ‘insert any number of band names here’ you’re listening to, but you can’t quite shake off the notion that it’s these outfits’ leftovers that are being served up, lukewarm and with no trimmings.

Harsh though that may sound, the ethos behind Waves is to be big, bold, bulging and brash and yet here I am many listens down the road and I don’t remember any of these songs, even though their sole purpose is to reside in your head. Waves is reasonably well named, the ten songs it contains (and two reworked tracks) often washing over you as though the tide was coming in before then receding out of sight with barely a mark left on the shore behind it.
