If you ever doubted that Austin, Texas was a hotbed of new rock 'n' roll artists, then look no further than White Dog, who have a new album out titled Double Dog Dare, which is is a pure trip down Classic Rock Avenue with their vintage blues rock sound that should thrill any fan of vintage Allman Brothers Band, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top, or even Deep Purple. Though they stray a bit farther away from the normal doom sound, we hear from most of the bands on the Rise Above label, as with their previous self-titled album, White Dog really sounds like they have dropped in from a time capsule from 1970 with their truly American brand of hard rock. Just listen to the glorious "Hold Smokes" or the organ-fueled rock "Double Dog Dare" to help transport you back in time, and with "F.D.I.C.," you'll swear it's Allman & Betts jamming with Grand Funk Railroad! "Glenn's Tune" blends the Grateful Dead with Allman Brothers Band and Marshall Tucker Band (those weaving guitar lines are so good), and "Frozen Shadows", in addition to being the longest track on the album, gives off some heavy James Gang vibes at times but tosses in those fine twin guitar harmonies. "Lady of Mars" is pure Wishbone Ash, even down to the melodic vocal delivery, and "The Last 'Dam' Song" again blends early '70s Southern rock with a touch of Wishbone Ash bluesy twin-guitar mastery, slide guitar, and smoky organ tones.
I will deduct a point however for the waste of two tracks with the filler pieces "A Message From Our Sponsor" and "Prelude", but otherwise, this is a fabulous throwback to the '70s bluesy hard rock scene that I can easily recommend to music fans who can't get enough of those classic sounds.
