Here we have what is normally called a 'split' album, which we see quite a bit in stoner rock, doom, black, and death metal, but in this case titled In Search of the Cosmic Tale: Crossing the Galactic Portal from stoner/heavy psych veterans Nebula and Black Rainbows, out now on Heavy Psych Sounds Records. Featuring three songs from each band and clocking in at just over 30 minutes, you get what equates to a full album. Fu Manchu offshoots Nebula are up first, and they bust out of the gate with the crushing anthem "Acid Drop", a kick-ass song with big-time riffs and loads of groove. "Eye of the Storm" shows off their psychedelic side...it's more of a slow mover, but there are some cool fuzz riffs and the song picks up towards the back end with some fat bass lines and whammy bar wrangling. "Ceasar XXXIV" finishes up their run on this album, another psych drenched track with effects-laden vocals, dreamy atmosphere, before the lumbering '70s heavy rock riffs and acid soaked guitar solos kick in. In short, a job well done from Nebula! Now, for Black Rainbows, they start off their trio with the groovy stoner monster "The Secret" (man, those vocals are great!), the COC & Monster Magnet influenced rocker "Thunder Lights on the Greatest Sky", which contains thunderous grooves and massive riffs, and "Dogs of War", an atmospheric Alice in Chains styled rocker that also contains some trippy psych elements. What's interesting is that these were leftover tracks from the Superskull album sessions, but honestly, these songs are just as good as what we heard on that fine 2023 release. All told, these six songs, three each from these two fine bands, are quite good, and I'd urge any fan to seek this out, or, if you are looking to investigate Nebula and Black Rainbows, this is a great place to get a taste of their music.
