Florida stoner rock veterans The Electric Mud return with another stellar set for Small Stone Recordings, this one titled Ashes and Bone. Containing ten new tracks of energetic, muscular arrangements, Ashes and Bone grabs the listener right from the outset with the catchy and riff-heavy "Silent Gods", and doesn't let go for the entire 40-minute ride. "Top of the Tree" blends the ferocity of Fu Manchu with the melodic might of Soundgarden, and the rumbling grooves of "The Crowd That Eats the Head" are an instant draw, with the added psychedelic bits thrown in for some icing on the cake. Other highlights include the fuzz-drenched "Gone Are the Days", the trippy guitar assault of "Wrath of the Mighty" (complete with some simmering organ), the prog-meets-stoner of the title track, and the bluesy heavy psych of the 9-minute "Ace". While there are plenty of heavy, juicy riffs courtesy of guitarists Constantine Grim and Peter Kolter, it's Peter's lead vocals that impress the most here. He has a really engaging vocal style, that is quite bluesy and melodic, yet perfectly suitable for those heavier moments when he needs a little more grit. Overall, really good stuff here, and I'll say even more impressive than their last album Burn the Ships.
