Delving is the side project of Elder main man Nicholas DiSalvo, and here we have the second release All Paths Converge, which again sees DiSalvo writing and performing everything with the exception of some Fender Rhodes and piano in spots by Fabien de Menou and additional guitar ambiance on one track courtesy of Michael Risberg. For those not familiar with Delving, it's the psychedelic/prog alter ego for DiSalvo, all-instrumental, and you could even say 'Krautrock-ish' in spots. "Sentinel" kicks things off and shows you right away what a different beast this is from his main band Elder, as busy drums and zig-zagging flutter around spacey guitars, while the throbbing "Omnipresence" floats and soars in grand space rock fashion, the synth textures being especially lovely. There's the bright "Chain of Mind", the dreamy "New Meridian" (love those synth washes and booming bass grooves), and of course the big epics at the back end of the album, "Zodiak", "The Ascetic", and "Vanish With Grace", all which provide lots of soaring space-rock moments. And yeah, while Delving might not deliver the 'guitar thunder' of Elder, there are plenty of exciting & engaging guitar textures and colors to be found throughout the album, though it's less about riffs & solos and more about the guitar filling in spaces around all the wonderful keyboard soundscapes.
All Paths Converge is a lovely little album, and if you enjoy instrumental space rock, it's an album that should be on your immediate radar.
