What do you get when you combine elements of bands such as Opeth, Tool, Rush, Mastodon, The Ocean, and Between the Buried and Me? Probably something that sounds like Scottish band Dvne on their brand new release Voidkind. One wouldn't think that genres such as progressive rock, psych, post-rock, sludge, death metal, alternative, and progressive metal could all co-exist under one roof, but somehow these five dudes from Edinburgh have made the impossible happen with their hyper-technical, atmospheric, and often time brutal music. At one minute they are laying down some glorious, dare I say beautiful melodies on "Eleonora", at another their furious, complex might crushes the foundation to cinders on "Summa Blasphemia". "Reaching for Telos" has some intricate textures that are so pleasing on the ear, but they then crush you with mammoth riffs and monstrous vocal bellows. And, how about those wild, acrobatic drums and layers of prog-metal styled guitars on the raucous "Sarmatæ"? Wild stuff. I'll go so far as to throw "Abode of the Perfect Soul" as my favorite track here (the riff is so colossal!) but the nearly 10-minute closer "Cobalt Sun Necropolis" contains some of Voidkind most melodic and proggy moments, so that's also one to consider.
I had never heard a lick of Dvne's music prior to this one, but this will for sure be a band I'm going to keep a close eye on going forward. And yeah, the 'v' in their name is apparently pronounced like a 'u', so 'dune' is how you say it.
