Nightmare: Encrypted

On the heels of a three-CD set, Waiting for the Power: The Early Years, which includes the band's first two albums along with a bonus disc of rare and unreleased material, France’s Nightmare is back with its first record of new songs since 2020. Encrypted marks the debut of female singer Barbara Mogore, whose vocals allow Nightmare to deliver an ambitious album that incorporates traditional heavy metal, melodic death metal and even shards of symphonic black metal.

It’s quite an accomplishment for a band that’s been around since 1979 and includes a lengthy list of past members. Yet Encrypted sounds fresh -- alternately celebratory and anthemic (“Wake the Night,” “Voices from the Other Side”), gritty and raw (“Nexus Inferis,” “Incandescent”) and vicious and lethal (“The Blossom of My Hate,” “Saviours of the Damned”).

This one will keep you wide awake.
