Blacksmith Tales' 2024 album Pathway to Hamlet's Mill is a captivating blend of folk prog, symphonic prog, and progressive metal. In their sophomore studio release, this Italian sextet weaves a rich tapestry of sound, with medieval nuances and conceptual storytelling.
Vocal duties are shared between Beatrice Demori and Stefano Sbrignadello, with Demori's operatic range and expressive delivery taking center stage. Her English vocals bring a sense of universality, while Sbrignadello's Italian vocals add a touch of cultural depth.
The band's sound relies heavily on the melodic interplay between keyboardist Luca Zanon, pianist David Del Fabro, and guitarist Marco Falanga, who also handles bass duties. This symphonic backbone provides a solid foundation for the album's intricate arrangements and conceptual themes.
Standout tracks include the epic symphonic opener “Hamlet’s Mill Overture”, the medieval-inspired “The Flame Within”, and the heavy and bombastic “Descent of God”. While the album title and lyrics are conceptual in nature, the music itself feels more organic and free flowing. However, some production hiccups occasionally disrupt the flow, particularly during transitions between tracks or abrupt shifts in mood.
Despite these minor quibbles, Pathway to Hamlet's Mill is a solid addition to the modern Rock Progressivo Italiano scene. Blacksmith Tales' unique blend of folk, symphonic, and metal elements makes them an appealing listen for fans of progressive rock. With some refinement in production and cohesion, this talented sextet has the potential to forge an even more compelling sound in the future.
