Kings of Mercia: Battle Scars
I approached Battle Scars with high expectations, given the impressive debut from Kings of Mercia in 2022. This supergroup, comprised of Steve Overland on vocals, Jim Matheos on guitar, Simon Phillips on drums, and Joey Vera on bass, had already demonstrated their collective prowess. However, Battle Scars proves to be a slightly different beast.
While their self-titled debut was a solid, front-to-back record with a few standout tracks, Battle Scars feels more back-loaded. The album gains momentum midway through with "Don't Ask," maintaining a high level of quality until the closing track, "Angels & Demons" - a slow-burning favorite of mine.
The album's first half is more uneven, with some tracks feeling merely good or, in the case of the title track "Battle Scars”, a bit boring despite its beautifully crafted message. However, "Guns and Ammunition" and "Between Two Worlds" showcase the band's heavier, melodic side.
When the songwriting clicks, it's truly exceptional. Tracks like "Aftermath," "Hell N' Back," and "Cold" demonstrate the band's ability to craft top-shelf material. Jim Matheos's guitar work is infectious, with impressive riffs and solos throughout. Steve Overland's vocals are perfectly suited for this brand of hard, heavy rock.
The rhythmic section, comprised of Simon Phillips and Joey Vera, provides an extra layer of greatness. Phillips's drumming is outstanding, aging like a fine Cabernet, while Vera's metronomic bass playing keeps the engine oiled and flawless.
Without surpassing their debut, Battle Scars is a very solid record that will please existing fans and attract new listeners. Kings of Mercia have delivered a worthy follow-up, and I'm excited to see where they'll go from here. Recommended! Cheers!
