Abrams: Blue City

For a fresh take on modern metal you absolutely must hear the latest album from Denver, Colorado’s Abrams titled Blue City. I recently reviewed the band’s 2022 effort In The Dark, which was a revelatory listen for me. I think the new one just may have topped it, and that folks must not have been easy to achieve.

The band’s sound palette consists of layered guitars, powerful and precise rhythmic attacks, and melodic vocals that soar into the stratosphere. Blue City might have a slightly more nuanced sound, something which greatly benefits the music. Another huge plus are the addictive riffs heard throughout Blue City. Take the album’s first track “Tomorrow” as a prime example. The intro gleams with knife edged riffs having plenty of meat on the bone and that undefinable ear worm quality. The varied guitar work takes the listener through psychedelic and atmospheric musical palettes and the excellent vocals add another addictive quality. The scorching lead guitar solo is something to behold. With “Fire Waltz” the chord progressions are fast and catchy with just the right amount of technicality. The musicianship is excellent throughout and never gets in the way of the song. “Etherol” is not quite as heavy and has a more nuanced approach with the sound layers less dense and more space between the notes. “Lungfish” has varying shades of light and dark with heavy walls of sound and shorter outbursts of guitar. The tone is slightly melancholic with smart usage of guitar effects creating some cool atmospheric moments.

I could go on but I am going to leave the rest to you. Take it from me, this is one of the best slices of heavy music you will hear this year. Absolutely recommended!

A Ripple Music release.
