Steve Hunt / Tim Miller: Changes
Keyboardist Steve Hunt and guitarist Tim Miller join forces and have me hooked right out of the starting gate. Miller evokes Allan Holdsworth in his chording, solos, and phrasing. The music is highly melodic, and not as abstract as Allan’s compositions.
“Falling” opens the disc, and as much as I love guitar, Hunt’s soloing on both Rhodes and synth is inspired. Miller’s legato makes me jealous, before you know it; his smooth soloing style is unleashed. Now that you have been dazzled by the soloing, make sure you really listen to Johnson and Wakerman, they are cooking. The ethereal keyboard-led “Changes” takes you into a more spacious realm where the notes seem to float in the air. I do enjoy the more aggressive tracks like “Inverted”, Johnson and Husband are great here. The reigns get pulled in a bit during Hunt’s synth solo, but before you know it, they are rocking again. Miller sets the fretboard on fire here as you work your way into the 4-minute mark, wow! “Chrysalis” features beautiful piano/acoustic guitar, but “Emergence” is my favorite track, I love everything I hear, the chording, melodies, it’s so lively, and once Miller’s soling hits, all I can think of is once this is over, I want to play it again. Hunt’s synth soloing has such a great feel and presence in the mix, these two were meant to play together.
I hope they continue to work together in the future, the writing allows plenty of freedom for soloing, while all the musicians complement each other. Strong songs, well played and arranged, you can’t ask for much more.
