PTF: Ambiguous Fragile Design

The sound of the violin gets me every time, as much as I love guitar, there is no denying that beautiful sound. The atmospheric intro of “To The Skyline” treats the listener to the haunting beauty of the violin, and as the song builds, it shows the violin can rock too. Piano and synths create the vibe, a well-constructed and orchestrated piece of music. “Eris” opens with an aggressive passage, and what sounds like some distortion added to the violin, giving it grit. The track jumps back and forth between melodic symphonic sections, and more aggressive style. After two tracks, I’m in, this band has good melodic sensibility, and enough punch and aggression to keep me on my toes. “In the Abyss” features how gorgeous the violin/piano combination can be.

Each song contains the right mix of heaviness blended with their melodic sensibilities. The more I listen, the more I connect with the music. I like the use of the Rhodes sound during “Inner Conflict”, a nice change of pace from the piano and synths, a good solo too. The album ends with a 25-minute epic track “Thesis” and as you’d expect it combines, as it kicks off you get the most aggressive keyboard playing I’ve heard yet with the organ. Various themes occur throughout, and I like the energy the band displays, and most importantly you get great melodies to keep you coming back for repeat listens.

I plan to investigate more from this band's catalog, and I have to thank Ken Golden for the heads up on this band, another winner from Japan!
