Cometh the Storm is the ninth studio album from US sludge/stoner metal veterans High on Fire, led as always by the legendary presence of guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, and he's joined here by longtime bassist Jeff Matz and new drummer Coady Willis, who comes over from The Melvins after replacing founding member/drummer Des Kensel, who left the band back in 2019. Despite the line-up change, the formula hasn't changed all that much, which, for loyal fans, that will be a good thing. Eleven new songs make up Cometh the Storm, chock full of Pike's trademark roar, heavy hitting drums, and an endless supply of piledriving riffs. "Lambsbread" opens, and it's full speed ahead for a crushing assault the rest of the way through, from the mid-paced lumbering "Burning Down", the raging sludge/thrash of "Trismegistus", the blitzkrieg heaviness meets Middle Eastern elements of the title track, to pummeling near doom tracks such as "Sol's Golden Curse" and "Darker Fleece", the latter coming close to Celtic Frost level intensity. Pike's guitar tones on this album are lethal, the production helping his already massive sounding guitar riffs achieve even mightier heights.
The amount of power and ferocity that High on Fire can conjure is on full display here with Cometh the Storm, another winner from a band that's never released a bad album.
