Confirmation Bias: Century Mornings

Confirmation Bias’s debut album Century Mornings is a dark, heavy Neo-Prog masterpiece that explores the shadowy aspects of human nature. The band is comprised by Ørjan Risa Svensen on electric guitar and vocals, Jon Martin Haarr on bass, Kai Gabrielsen on drums, Eirik Hanssen on acoustic guitar and vocals, Lars Martin Aagsård on lead vocals, and Fredrik Skår on keyboards.

From the opening track "Residence in You," it's clear that the band has crafted a unique sound, blending heaviness with infectious, brain-sticking melodies. The song's epic conclusion is reminiscent of Marillion's Misplaced Childhood era, setting the tone for the rest of the album. The Scandinavian influence is more pronounced in "Living with The Lie," with its rough, dark edges and prominent use of riffs and keyboard layers. Each instrument takes center stage, showcasing the band's technical prowess.

"In Memory Of…" is a highlight, with its IQ-inspired heaviness and intricate instrumental work. The song teases with Progressive Metal elements, featuring a captivating instrumental middle section and an epic buildup to its conclusion. A strong rhythmic section and prominent bass sound elevate the album's least complex track, which nonetheless showcases the band's comfort zone in early Marillion-esque territory " a sweet spot for Neo-Prog fans.

By the time "Epiphany" arrives, the listener has fully acclimated to the vocalist's distinctive tone, enhancing the experience. This song encapsulates the band's unique sound, combining impressive musicality with catchy, memorable melodies. The atmospheric "One Man Show" serves as a poignant interlude, its lonely, artistic vibe recalling RPWL's Yogi Lang. This brief respite prepares the listener for the grandeur of the title track, "Century Mornings."

This 18-minute epic is a masterclass in modern progressive rock, fulfilling expectations and satisfying fans of Magic Pie. The song seamlessly blends Magic Pie's influence with symphonic nuances, evoking acts like The Flower Kings and The Tangent. "Century Mornings" provides a triumphant conclusion to a remarkable debut album.

While Magic Pie's fans eagerly await new material, Century Mornings has filled the void with a stunning debut. Here's to hoping for more from this talented group! Cheers!
