Listeners only familiar with the renowned songs vocalist Chris Thompson sang (“For You,” Blinded by the Light” and “You’re the Voice") might be surprised by how much they enjoy The Final Round-Live. Recorded in Germany on Thompson’s farewell tour -- when the former lead vocalist for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band was 75 years old -- this 18-song two-disc set also serves as a fundraiser for a children’s cancer station in Karlsruhe, Germany.
From the get-go, this is a stellar performance by Thompson and his veteran four-man band. Instrumental opener “Waiter There’s a Yawn in My Ear” sets the mood for a setlist that covers many aspects of the man’s career as one of rock’s hardest-working and often-overlooked singers.
Of course, the big songs stand out (especially a rousing solo piano version of “For You”), and “You’re the Voice” (which Thompson co-wrote and has been covered by artists from Alan Parsons to Heart). But "You Angel You” and “Buddha” will garner greater appreciation for Thompson’s body of work.
Indeed, every track here is a revelation. If you’re new to his catalog, this show is a delightful listen; if you’re already a fan, you’ll marvel at the energy Thompson and his band maintain throughout the show. The crowd is appreciative, and you get the sense that Thompson is pleased with this fitting finale.
