Todd Rundgren and Arthur Brown plowing through “21st Century Schizoid Man”? Joe Lynn Turner going chill on “Moonchild”? And former Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey pulling triple-duty on “Epitaph”? Yes, yes and yes.
On this reimagining of In the Court of the Crimson King, an all-star lineup of vocalists and musicians proves that King Crimson’s groundbreaking 1969 debut still holds up. In addition to the artists mentioned above, the roster for various songs includes Crimson alums Mel Collins (sax and flutes on “21st Century Schizoid Man” and “I Talk to the Wind,” respectively) and Jakko M. Jakszyk (guitar, keys and vocals on “I Talk to the Wind”). Other guests include vocalist James LaBrie, guitarists Marty Friedman, Chris Poland and Steve Hillage, bassists Jah Wobble and Django Jakszyk, and drummers Chester Thompson and Ian Paice.
A pair of bonus tracks offer alternate and instrumental takes on“21st Century Schizoid Man.” It’s a bit of overkill -- but all in the name of King Crimson! This is a solid listen with the involved artists paying their respects while also adding their own touches. And it no doubt will encourage listeners to go back and give the original a spin again.
