Celtic rock meets gothic metal on Tranceforming, the seventh album from the German band Thanateros. This dark quartet delivers gloomy yet heavily melodic anthems accented by violin, whistles, shakers, bagpipes, cello, harp and other instruments that contribute to the band’s folky sound. It’s oddly disconcerting (yet also refreshingly original) to hear a German band that records some of its songs in its native language embracing distinctly Irish-Nordic musical traditions. The Celtic influences overpower the gothic tendencies, but Ben Richter’s raw, dramatic voice combined with gutsy guitars and a robust rhythm section ensure Tranceforming remains rooted in metal. And it just might, as the title suggests, put you in a trance, too.
