Wingfield, Mark: The Gathering
Mark Wingfield’s somber guitar tones create the atmospheric landscape for the album. Wingfield is joined by the ever-busy Gary Husband (Keyboards/Piano/Drums), and splits time with two extraordinary bassists Tony Levin and Percy Jones. Drummer Asaf Sirkis returns having played on Wingfield’s previous release Tales from the Dreaming City. The music throughout is brooding, it ebbs and flows between sparse moments, improvisation, and interesting soloing. At its core, this is more about creating a mood to my ears, sonic explorations.
Standout tracks for me “Apparition in the Vaults” which features my favorite soloing from Wingfield, and Levin’s bass playing shines. His tone takes on a horn-like quality during sections of “A Fleeting Glance” and other places on the album. His haunting tone and soloing make “Pursued in the Snow Lit Forest” another favorite. Husband's piano playing is out front for “The Listening Trees” offering a change of pace, while Wingfield’s playing is stellar.
This is definitely music you need to be in the mood for, but a very unique and compelling album.
