Beledo: Flotando con el vacio
Multi-Instrumentalist Beledo has released his ninth solo album Flotando con el vacio. I enjoyed my first taste of Beledo on his 2021 release Seriously Deep and was immediately struck by his Holdsworth influenced soloing. If you can convincingly pull that off, you know you are listening to an accomplished guitar player. On his latest release, you are treated to a lot of acoustic guitar and the flute playing of Jorge Pardo to kick things off. Beledo even pulls out some violin on the opening track. I have to admit an attraction to the guitar and piano, the purity of that sound is something that always hits me. Guest Gary Husband appears on three tracks, and this is where things catch fire, the guitar and keys on “De Tardecita” immediately grabs my attention. The drums also ignite the players here, and as you hit the six-minute mark, the band starts ripping. The volume swells, wonderful piano and flute playing in “Flotando En El Vacio” are a true showcase for Beledo’s talent; one has to be impressed by his skills. It is a personal preference, but I prefer composed music over improv, and the eight minutes of “Es Prohibeix Blasfemar” has intriguing moments, but it tends to lose my interest. “From Within” has some ripping guitar and flute trading solos, the closing few minutes ramp up the excitement level. The 16-minute closer “Rodeaos” also features some great playing, but also feels noodle and disjointed, making it a long slog for me.
Overall, this disc features excellent musicianship, intricate playing, and out of the box song writing. Beledo is a highly skilled musician, unfortunately at times throughout this disc it’s difficult for me to connect with the music. As impressive as the playing is on this album, I’m not sure it is something that will draw me in for multiple listens.
