Perdomo, Fernando: Waves
It’s not uncommon for most of us to make New Year’s resolutions, and Fernando Perdomo has laid out quite a task for himself in 2025. On January 1st, he dropped a 10 track instumental album titled Waves and has tasked himself with releasing a new album on the first day of each month through the year. If you are not familiar with Mr. Perdomo, he is very accessible on social media, and lives and breathes music. He is constantly interacting with fans and posting about his latest projects. Waves is a follow-up project to his Out to Sea albums 1-4, and Perdomo wrote, recorded, produced, mixed, and played all the instruments here, a true solo release.
Track 2 “Mind Reader” immediately captures my attention with its intensity and you know I just love to hear that guitar playing up in the mix, and it ends with a little nod to Mr. Gilmour with that muted guitar riff. Perdomo treats us to some slide on “Puzzle Peace” with an almost danceable funky feel, and the acoustic 12 string on “Outer Worlds” is a nice change of pace. “The Endless Coast” has a beautiful melody and has an accompanying video. The harmony guitars during “Beautiful Soul” are nice, but I have to admit I’d like to hear another drummer get his hands on this one. To me, the drumming might be where things fall a bit short for me. I love the atmospheric “My Favorite Feeling”, this captures a mood, as if you were sitting on the beach at night just listening to the waves. The volume swells that open “Transcendental Medication” sound great, and the playing as a whole on this one gives off a Santana vibe. The closing “Waves at Nightfall” is a peaceful, relaxing song that leaves you wondering what will be coming to us in February.
Perdomo has quite a task ahead of him, it’s great for fans to get so much music, but quality is key and must be maintained. It’s also inspiring to a musician like myself to get back to writing and recording, something I have been wanting to do. Sticking to such a tight schedule is a daunting task, and tackling all this as a solo artist is a lot to take on. In the spirit of artists like Todd Rundgren, Mike Oldfield, Prince and many others, it really gives you a picture of what the artists is all about. There are going to be a few warts, and we know that an outside producer is often helpful with suggestions and arranging. I wish Perdomo luck on this journey, and plan to listen to each release, make sure to check this out and check back each month for the next release.
