For his fourth solo album I Want Blood, Alice in Chains guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell delivers an album that sounds remarkably like, well, Alice in Chains. 46 minutes of brooding, doom-laden hard rock and heavy metal as only Mr. Cantrell can deliver. Along to help out is a large list of notable musicians, including Duff McKagen, Mike Bordin, Robert Trujillo, Gil Sharone, and Greg Puciato, among others. "Vilified" kicks things off in true AiC fashion, with big crushing riffs and Jerry's haunting vocals, which leads into the equally moving and heavy "Off the Rails", those trademark vocal harmonies ringing every clear over the weaving harmony lead guitars and crunching riffs. Songs like "Afterglow", "Throw Me a Line", and "I Want Blood" are catchier and more leading towards '90s hard rock, but you also have the chilling, deep melancholy of "Echoes of Laughter" and the pure doom metal of "Let It Lie", which are two of my absolute favorites here.
I Want Blood loses a little bit of steam with the last two tracks "Held Your Tongue" and "It Comes', but overall, this is an excellent release from Cantrell that some might argue could have made a great Alice in Chains album. Time will tell how soon we will have to wait for that, but we shall see.
