Savage Master: Dark and Dangerous
Savage Master is a traditional metal band fronted by vocalist Stacey Savage. They are a relatively new but notable act on the recent NWOTHM (new wave of traditional heavy metal) scene that has collectively made a significant mark on the heavy music scene in recent years.
Their new album Dark and Dangerous is full of the sort of 'raised fist-inducing' riffing you'd find in the classic hard rock/heavy metal of bands like Judas Priest. In terms of style, and referencing a band like Judas Priest, there are shades of everything from their 1970s output, up to and including the more metallic sound adopted in the 1990s.
Savage Master's sound offers something a little unique in the landscape of traditional heavy metal due to the Vocals of frontwoman Stacy Savage. Whilst the female-fronted sound is somewhat unique her phrasing and delivery is no doubt influenced by the classic acts. Everything from Halford to Tate to King Diamond is arguably noticeable on Dark and Dangerous. Lyrically there are plenty of Occult-themed lyrics to add a darkness to the album that goes hand in hand with the cover art aesthetic and stage theatrics that the band is known for.
Given the retro/classic styling of the band, it's probably no surprise that they haven't crafted anything particularly groundbreaking or novel with this album, however, it's a really easy and enjoyable album for me to listen to. The guitar work is great and the arrangements are largely intricate enough to keep me interested and entertained throughout. The uptempo 'Warriors Call', ghostly 'Screams from the Cellar' and the melodic moody closer 'Cold Hearted Death' are highlights to my ears. Tracks like 'Devil Rock' are perhaps a little straightforward or pedestrian for my taste, but equally there will be fans who love that sort of straight-up heavy rock and roll approach.
This album is a solid release, and an easy recommendation for fans of the new wave of traditional heavy metal.
