Independent solo artist Chuck Moyer (Keyboards/Drum Programming) is a one-man band on Geryon Claque Fermata. Moyer’s bio lists the Keytar as his main instrument for solo live performances, an instrument you don’t hear about much these days. Moyer is obviously a talented keyboardist, something that is obvious as you make your way through the disc. I really like the sounds, textures and playing in “You Look Familiar”. But, the downside of a one-man show is having to make compromises that affect the overall product. The drum programming is off-putting, and at times a bit clumsy. With only a keyboard, for me the lack of bass and guitar hurts the sound and compositions. “Tea Among the Cognoscenti” features cool bass parts and an intricate arrangement, one of my favorite tracks on the disc. “Naiad” has a New Age feel, and the drum programming doesn’t always fit the song to my ears.
The CD has really interesting cover art that is Analyphs (3D imaging), and the packaging comes with the Red and Blue glasses to use. Moyer would do well to collaborate on future recording projects to help enhance his compositions and sound. I applaud Moyer for following his vision, but having a full band involved in recording and arranging his music would make a world of difference in the final product.
