Sacrifice: Volume Six

Sacrifice is a old-school thrash band from Canada. They're a notable band, and were at the forefront of the Canadian scene in the 80s. Annihilator, Voivod, Razor, and Sacrifice are arguably the Canadian equivalent of the Big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax). Unlike a lot of the aforementioned bands however, Sacrifice hasn't been on a constant writing and touring cycle since the 1980s. In fact, Sacrifice wrapped things up in the mid 90s, before reforming for the odd show and release since mid 2006. Volume Six is their 6th studio album.

Volume Six is an enjoyable thrash metal release. It's fast and aggressive like Slayer or Exodus, and stands out a little from the pack for the extreme vocal style used throughout. To my ears the vocal delivery is a mix of Kill Em All era, shouting Hetfield, and the sort of high- pitched death growls that Chuck went with during the late era Death records. As I listen through the album the overriding thought is that this is exactly the sort of music I'd enjoy catching at a big open- air festival.

Would I call this album Death-Thrash? Maybe. Whatever it is I get the feeling Volume Six will have served its purpose and will see Sacrifice tour extensively where the songs will really come into their own. This album isn't redefining thrash metal, nor is it trying to, but as is the case whenever these legacy acts release new music, it's an enjoyable and notable release. Die-hard thrashers will want to check this out for sure.
