Tak Matsumoto Group (TMG): TMG II

Tak Matsumoto Group's (TMG) sophomore effort, TMG II, is a testament to the enduring power of rock music. The reunion of guitar legend Tak Matsumoto and vocalist Eric Martin, alongside bassist Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and drummer Matt Sorum (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver), yields a formidable lineup that delivers solid, hard-hitting rock compositions.

Matsumoto's guitar work is, as expected, splendid, while Martin's vocals remain well-preserved and accurate, navigating the album's blend of hard FM rock, mid-80s metal, heavy AOR, and classic rock nuances reminiscent of Rainbow and UFO.

Standout tracks include the opener "Crash Down Love," the addictive "Jupiter and Mars," the heavy rocker "Dark Island Woman," the catchy "Faithful Now," and the closer "Guitar Hero." While the collaborations with Baby Metal ("Eternal Flames") and Lisa ("The Story of Love") feel out of place, the remainder of the album is a highly enjoyable, grow-on-you record that solidifies TMG II as a worthy follow-up to its predecessor, despite the 20-year gap… cheers!
