Vivresse: Saint-Vivresse

Vivresse's self-titled debut album, Saint-Vivresse, is a mesmerizing journey through eclectic soundscapes, masterfully woven together by this Canadian quartet, which is comprised of Tommy Grandbois (guitars, vocals), Alex Grandbois (drums, percussion), Florence Dias (vocals, piano, flute), and Mathieu Gravel (bass).

The album's opener, "Vivresse pt.2," sets the tone for the record's genre-bending approach, seamlessly transitioning from folk-inspired notes to Sabbath-esque doom metal and culminating in a Breeders-Pixies vibe.

The band's unique blend of French and male-female vocals, courtesy of Tommy Grandbois and Florence Dias, adds a distinctive layer to their sound. "Au nom de" exemplifies this, with its captivating vocal interplay and intricate instrumentation.

Throughout the album, Vivresse showcases their versatility, effortlessly shifting between retro pop-rock ("Enfant Sauvage"), bluesy undertones ("La Saison des Melódies"), and circus-like complexity ("Le Monde à flot"). The percussion work, handled by Alex Grandbois, is particularly noteworthy, providing a dynamic foundation for the album's diverse soundscapes.

Standout tracks include the hauntingly beautiful "Violette," with its passive-aggressive tone and mesmerizing vocal delivery, and the Bowie-inspired "Merci," which effortlessly blends glam and glitter elements.

The album's magnum opus, "Drap Blanc/Drap Gris/Drap Noir," showcases the band's progressive leanings, with intricate guitar work, piano riffs, and soaring vocal harmonies. This epic track is a testament to Vivresse's innovative approach and musical prowess.

The album concludes with the doom-tinged "Vivreprise," providing a fitting closure to this captivating record. With Saint-Vivresse, Vivresse has crafted a truly unique and captivating album that will appeal to fans of eclectic and progressive rock. If you're open to exploring new sounds and non-English vocals, Vivresse is an absolute must-discover. Highly recommended.
