Calabrese, Luca: I Shin Den Shin

I-Shin-Den-Shin is a Japanese concept that describes a form of communication that transcends spoken words, relying on unspoken understanding, empathy, and shared feelings. It encapsulates the idea that emotions and thoughts can be conveyed and understood without the need for verbal communication. These words are taken from the press release, and I’m sure we all feel this way about music, it is special, healing, and spiritual for all who embrace it. Music is powerful, and I am sure every artist hopes their music speaks to others.

An experimental artist, the music is somber, moody, and atmospheric; led by the pocket trumpet of Luca Calabrese. Definitely a unique sound, it gives off a lonely, distant and haunting quality. This is music you need to be in the right mood to enjoy. For me, it’s a bit too sparse and one dimensional, the trumpet could use some counter instrumentation to make it more impactful. The accompaniment is Electric Guitar (Nguyen Le, Mark Wingfield) and Touch Guitar (Markus Reuter, Alexander Dowerk), but it just offers little variation for this listener. You may hear things differently, but six lengthy pieces of droning background music is not my cup of tea.
