Grave Digger: Bone Collector
Grave Digger. The German institution, not the monster truck. Formed in 1982 and with over 20 albums under their belt, these guys have been around the block more than a few times. Bone Collector is the band's 21st album.
I'm not a devotee however, I know parts of their discography reasonably well. Bone Collector serves up exactly what I expected from this longstanding band. Enjoyable, meat, potatoes, and vegetables, traditional heavy metal with gruff and husky vocals. The modern production is crisp, the riffing is tight and the rhythm section pounds hard. I really enjoy the vocals-It's almost as if Lemmy is singing for Accept or Manowar. Solid. Upon reflection perhaps this album is a little more raw, riffy and to the point than some of their past and recent albums (where they've tried to scale up their offering with synths, choirs etc). Either way, with Bone Collector you're getting a very 'heavy metal' release that lends itself to being cranked up loud when indulging in a couple of quiet ales.
Realistically though, this album is made for the diehards. I don't see too many first time listeners being converted into absolute Grave Digger fanatics off the back of this album (or the AI cover art). It will no doubt enable Grave Digger to get out on tour, play the festival circuit, and their longtime fans will be stoked to see them still going around playing an OG form of Heavy metal.
