Now, five albums into their comeback, NWOBHM legends Satan have once again knocked it out of the park with their latest release for Metal Blade Records, Songs in Crimson. Their brand of speed metal mixed with early Iron Maiden bombast keeps improving, and you could arguably say that their recent output far eclipses their '80s material. With Songs in Crimson, Brian Ross (vocals), Russ Tippins (guitars), Sean Taylor (drums), Steve Ramsey (guitars), and Graeme English (bass) have delivered 10 new fast & furious metal anthems littered with stellar musicianship (man, the guitars rip!), memorable hooks, and Ross' potent, hi-pitched vocal delivery. Right from the start, kick-ass tracks like "Frantic Zero", "Era (The Day Will Come)", and "Whore of Babylon" impress mightily, but the album gets better as it goes, with other standouts being the killer "Martyrdom", "Turn the Tide", and the crushing "Captives", among others. Some have scoffed at the production values of these recent albums, but to be honest, the raw sound suits the band just fine, and there has been a consistency with the production from album to album that appears to work for them.
I find the guitar work of Tippins and Ramsey to be brilliant throughout, and they have become one of the must-hear guitar duos in all of heavy metal. Songs in Crimson is another winner from Satan folks, and if you love melodic, twin lead guitar-led heavy metal/speed metal/NWOBHM, you absolutely need this album.
