Bass, Dave: Trio Nuevo

Pianist/composer/arranger Dave Bass has been releasing albums since 2010, seven in total, including his most recent titled Trio Nuevo, his fourth trio release. For this album the pianist is joined by drummer Steve Helfand and bassist Tyler Miles.

The trio have that innate ability to know where each other is going well before the future is set, creating a masterful set of tunes exhibiting passionate playing and beautiful arrangements. There are eleven songs; five originals, a few reworkings, and two using the classics as a starting point: the balladic “One Look� based on Gershwin’s “Embraceable You� and the energetic “Baby Melon� beginning where “My Melancholic Baby� left off. Both are excellent. The first track “These Times� showcases the trio’s ability to blend composition and improvisation, a heady listen to be sure. Next is Bass’ reworking of the classic “As Time Goes By� featuring a wonderful piano arrangement and Mile’s sinuous bass lines. “August� and “December� feature more outstanding bass work and Bass’ love for classical music is brought to fore in “Three Views Of Bach� where again, improvisation and composition are entangled together creating an inspired and compelling listen.

With Trio Nuevo, everything comes together to make a richly rewarding listening experience. Easily recommended for any and all fans of jazz music!
