Orange Goblin: Science, Not Fiction

Science, Not Fiction is the 10th, and now presumably, last album from UK stoner metal veterans Orange Goblin, who announced after the release of this latest Peaceville album that they would call it quits after the tour to promote the album. The 'final' line-up is:

Ben Ward-vocals
Joe Hoare-guitar
Chris Turner-drums
Harry Armstrong-bass

For longtime fans, Science, Not Fiction doesn't present anything particularly new to the Orange Goblin sound, but, as we've seen with this band over the years, the formula works. Big riffs, tough vocals, memorable songs...yep, 9 new songs, and they deliver all that and more. "The Fire at the Centre of the Earth is Mine" starts off things in fine fashion with plenty of groove and heft, Ward's forceful vocals a perfect foil for the rumbling drums and thick guitars, while the title track has more of a Motorhead punk 'n' roll feel to it, and "Ascend the Negative" has one of the coolest riffs on the album. There's even some mid-paced, moody fare on Science, Not Fiction, like "False Hope Diet" and "Cemetary Rats", which starts almost like a gloomy gothic metal piece before morphing into a furious stoner metal banger. "Gemini (Twins of Evil)" is pretty damn cool too, and truth be told, there isn't really a weak track here, though I don't think quality-wise Science, Not Fiction quite hits the highs of, say, A Eulogy For the Damned, but it's still pretty damn good. Whether this officially is the end of the band going forward I guess remains to be seen, but if so, they've certainly gone out on a high note.
