Unquiet Music Ltd: MEMEmusic

Here is an experimental project for you. Unquiet Music Ltd. features some familiar names like Adrian Benavides, Markus Reuter, Tony Levin, and Pat Mastelotto. The band formed in 2019 and released their debut album in 2020 titled In The Name Of…(A Prayer For Our Times). In 2023 they released their latest effort titled MEMEmusic. Back in 2021 I reviewed the debut and much like that album this is another bizarre but satisfying release. It is definitely outside the box and the band has created an original and innovative work that may take several listens to truly appreciate.

The weirdness begins with the strange title track beginning with a kind of filtered noise eventually leading to cacophonic bursts of intensity. A few minutes in acapella vocals begin, taking a cue from Haken perhaps. The band makes this strangely compelling as the arrangement takes on an added complexity. The song ends as it began, a dose of white noise leading directly to “I Succumb”, the soundscape slowly building with electronic pulses and spacey synths. The lead vocals have a Gabriel-like vibe and fit nicely within the song’s more structured framework. “Towards The Edge” features nice keyboards and spacey realms and as the song progresses the weirder it gets, the wordless vocals adding another layer of sound dynamics. More intriguing moments include the ambient spaciness of “Lament”, the strange classical-new wave hybrid “Sometimes Love”, and the Gabriel inspired “Nemo Point” where Levin lays down some lovely Chapman stick work.

For something outside the traditional norms of rock music, MEMEmusic should certainly turn a few heads. The player’s creativity cannot be overstated. Recommended.
