Voice of Storms is the latest release from West Virginia sludge metal act Horseburner, a band whose music has been likened to Baroness and Mastodon due to their reliance on plenty of prog-rock elements in their otherwise heavy and pummeling sound. You can totally hear those comparisons, though Horseburner has a style all their own, which is evident right from the lumbering yet quite catchy and complex "The Gift". The back and forth between clean melodic vocals and a more gruff style reminds a lot of early Mastodon, and the mix of crushing riffs and intricate guitar flurries also give more than a little nod to the 'don."Heaven's Eye" is quite intriguing, as I'm finding the vocal melodies quite accessible, but I'm staying for the massive riffing and all the little noodling that's fluttering around the riffs. "The Fawn" drifts and soars in a mystical way not unlike '70s folk rock, and the near 8-minute "Hidden Bridge" is a glorious journey through Baroness-styled melodic prog/sludge, the guitar work and drumming quite intricate yet still heavy-hitting. "Palisades" is total Mastodon worship circa Leviathan and Blood Mountain, and "Diana" is a fun slice of atmospheric heavy rock with plenty of elastic guitar riffs and acrobatic drumming. Yep, these guys can get quite proggy! Closer "Widow (The Hunt & the Prize)" tops the 9-minute mark and fluctuates between massive doom and sludgy prog-metal.
This one has grown on me quite a bit in the months since its original release, as the wealth of little complexities and raw power of these songs continue to reveal themselves. Don't miss out on Voice of Storms, another special release from a young US band looking to make a name for themselves.
