I could listen to Jimmy Herring play guitar all day, he’s terrific. Widespread Panic is back with their 14th studio album Hailbound Queen, a 5 song, 35 minute album that gives fans what they want. Opener “King Baby” has a great lick, and that piano motif sets everything up so well. The best is that Herring’s playing is all over this one, and the band knows how to build the tension. The last two minutes with that growling organ and ripping guitar bring a smile to my face. I get a Grateful Dead vibe from “Blue Carousel”, and a poignant cover of Warren’s Zevon “Keep Me In Your Heart” provides the perfect counter to the mostly rocking album. “Trashy” is extremely catchy, and the closing "Halloween Face" is going to melt your face as Herring showcases that powerful guitar work. The song gets really heavy with a sinister tone, the organ and Jimmy’s guitar are such a 1-2 punch, I love this track. As I dig into this band's catalog, I have to say they cover a lot of ground musically, and I look forward to discovering their music.
