moe.: Live From Telefunken Soundstage

After reviewing moe.’s latest studio album Circle of Giants and being somewhat disappointed, I knew I had to check them out live before making up my mind. Thankfully I did, guitars abound on the opening “Lazarus�, and hearing the band groove, this is what I had hoped to hear. There is an energy here that was lacking in the studio, and as anyone will tell you, live performance is where it’s at in the jam genre. I really enjoy the bass during the intro of “Prestige World� as the band is setting the table for the next 14 minutes of your listening experience. The dual guitars start coming in, and that xylophone I assume being played on keyboards is a sound I am always drawn to, thank you Frank Zappa. What a great funky intro of bass and drums for “George�, and my favorite is the killer guitar playing in “Meat� while the band churns underneath. The silly lyrics are my only complaint here, on tracks like “Spine of a Dog�, it just takes something away from the song, I usually think to myself, just play the music gents!

Moe. is on my list for a band that I need to check out live, and hearing this live show I plan to go back and revisit Circle of Giants, but I think the energy and freedom of the stage is where the band thrive, good energy and musicianship, check out the live stuff first!!!
