Strobemørke is the latest Appolon Records release from veteran Norwegian progressive rock act Trojka, and comes five years after their previous release Tre ut from 2019. For this album, August Riise (keyboards), Simon Kvereneng (bass/vocals) and Gjert Hermansen (drums/percussion/vocals) are joined by Fredrik Mekki Wideroe (guitar/vocals) who is also a member of Seven Impale and Cloud People. Seven new tracks are featured here, showing off the band's penchant for quirky, almost Canterbury-ish styled prog with a pop sensibility. Opener "Aldri/Alltid" is a fun, vibrant song, with vocals in Norwegian and the arrangement switching between light and dreamy to more complex and upbeat. "Parasitt" features some really nice electric piano and lush vocals, with the finale being somewhat bombastic, while "Romvesen" brings to mind Hatfield and the North, Frank Zappa, and Gentle Giant with its quirky nature and charming jazz, funk, and prog elements. Nice guitar work and keys so far throughout the album. "En Smak Av Evighet" rocks more than some of the other tracks, complete with some blazing lead guitar work, and the instrumental title track might just be the most 'obvious' song to point to for loyal prog-rock fans...it's a good one. At the album's back end is the 12-minute epic "Satans Disko", a fun prog, fusion, pop, and Canterbury romp that takes the listener on all sorts of different journeys. Overall, there's plenty to like here, and while I wouldn't say that Trojka is completely on par with some of their Norwegian contemporaries like Wobbler, Tusmorke, and Jordsjo, they aren't far behind. Good stuff!
