Draper, Terry: In The Beginning

Having been a fan of Klaatu since the early days I found it quite refreshing to dig into the discography of former band member Terry Draper. Klaatu’s music was so well crafted and produced and the same can be said for Draper’s work. In The Beginning was released in early 2024 and like many of his other albums the multi-instrumentalist enlists the help of a supporting cast of musicians including the wonderful vocalist Brenda Webb and the talented guitarist Fernando Perdomo.

This is a return to the psychedelic pop whimsy that Draper has been known for. It is a richly orchestrated album with plenty of detail and of course Draper’s fine-tuned melodies and subtle vocals. There are many Klaatu-like moments throughout the thirteen tunes like the opening title track with its sophisticated psychedelic pop sound and lovely background harmonies, and in the whimsical “All Aboard”, Draper nods his cap to “Mrs. Toad’s Cookies” found on Klaatu’s Magentalane album. A sort of maudlin/Beatles slice of orchestrated pop from a bygone era. “Flowers’ is another nice pop tune with a fantastic vocal arrangement and an overall endearing melody. The Beatles is a main influence. Perdomo adds some burning lead guitar to the full fledged psychedelia of “Pigs Ears” and on the balladic “Lost Within You”, originally meant for a Klaatu album, the orchestral sophistication is second to none. Another highlight has to be the lovely “Diamonds Of The Mind” that has Klaatu written all over it and that makes sense since it was written by the band all those years ago.

In The Beginning is another winner from Draper and anyone who likes his old band should really check it out. Recommended.
